What is Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMADs)?

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) is a comprehensive term that recognizes the significant problematic shift in mental, emotional, and behavioral functioning among parents during the perinatal timeframe, pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery of children. It’s usually called “Postpartum”.
What are some of the diagnoses experienced within PMADs?
Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, and Psychosis

Yes. We can evaluate your needs and choose a prescription medication that is safe for you and your growing family. We also explore treatment approaches through complementary alternative medicines.

I am past my six-week post-delivery date. Can I still experience PMADs?

Yes. While various studies have found increases in PMADs at different times post-delivery, most PMAD symptoms present or increase at nine, 12, 17, and 21 months post-delivery, with outliers at two days and 36 months post-delivery (Rosander et al., 2021).

NO! PMADs are NEVER your fault. You have not done anything wrong. Difficult emotions, thoughts, and behaviors are common during pregnancy and after delivery. Talk with our treatment experts to discuss possible causes, prevention measures, and treatment options.

Yes! PMADs can affect one or both parents during pregnancy and post-delivery. Both parents can receive an assessment and a personalized treatment plan.
